Today’s Gospel (Luke 5:17–26) recounts the moment when friends lowered a paralyzed man through the roof to place him before Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus forgave the man’s sins and healed him, leading the crowd to proclaim: “We have seen incredible things today.”
This passage speaks not only of the healing power of Christ but also of the importance of community, intercession, and faith in action. For me, it mirrors my own journey with mental health — a journey marked by depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation, but also one of healing and restoration through Jesus.
“The Power of the Lord Was with Him for Healing”
One phrase that struck me from the Gospel is: “the power of the Lord was with him for healing.” Just as Jesus healed the paralyzed man through the power of the Holy Spirit, He has brought healing to my soul.
Through the right balance of medicine, exercise, confession, and prayer, I’ve experienced the Lord’s grace lifting me out of darkness. Like the paralyzed man’s friends who lowered him before Jesus, I, too, was carried into His presence — not on a stretcher, but through sacraments and community support.
“What Are You Thinking in Your Hearts?”
Another line that speaks to me is when Jesus says: “What are you thinking in your hearts?” This reminds me that Jesus knows my innermost being. In prayer and meditation, I can welcome the Holy Spirit into my thoughts and recognize when they turn dangerous. Jesus, the healer of body and soul, meets me in that vulnerable space.
“We Have Seen Incredible Things Today”
The crowd marveled at Jesus’ healing, declaring: “We have seen incredible things today.” I echo that sentiment in my own life. Each day I remain free from destructive thoughts, I stand in awe of how Jesus continues to save my soul and restore my joy.
A Word of Hope
If you are struggling with mental health, know this: Jesus sees you, knows your heart, and longs to bring healing. His grace works through medicine, therapy, prayer, and community. Do not be afraid to bring your struggles before Him — He can and will make you rise again.
