St. Thérèse’s Feast Day | The Little Flower and the Power of Saintly Inspiration

Today, October 1, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, lovingly known as “The Little Flower.” Her humble, childlike spirituality continues to inspire countless men and women to pursue sainthood through simplicity, confidence, and love.

In Catholic tradition, we look to the saints not as objects of worship but as examples and intercessors. They provide us with a map toward our ultimate goal: union with Christ, the Light of the World, God our Father, and the Blessed Mother Mary.

St. Thérèse and St. Joan of Arc

One of St. Thérèse’s greatest inspirations was St. Joan of Arc. Thérèse often depicted Joan in plays, studied her life, and drew from her courage. Remarkably, these two French saints were canonized within just five years of each other — Joan in 1920 and Thérèse in 1925 — despite living centuries apart.

For Thérèse, Joan was more than a heroine; she was a spiritual role model. In her writings, Thérèse recalled:

“When reading the accounts of the patriotic deeds of French heroines, especially the Venerable Joan of Arc, I had a great desire to imitate them… God inspired me with the understanding that my own glory would not be seen by mortals, but would consist in becoming a great saint.”

This realization became a turning point for Thérèse, shaping her famous “Little Way” of holiness.

Why Saintly Inspirations Matter

Just as St. Thérèse drew inspiration from Joan of Arc, we too can find encouragement and guidance from the saints. Their examples show us that holiness is not out of reach, but lived through faith, courage, humility, and love.

On this Feast of the Little Flower, I pray for the intercession of both St. Thérèse and St. Joan of Arc as I strive to grow in holiness. Who are your saintly inspirations?

I’m Amy

After learning about a saint who played tennis and hung out with her friends at coffee shops, I realized you don’t have to be a martyr or a nun to get to Heaven! Through this blog, I share that awesome truth. When I’m not writing, you can find me coding, frequenting Adoration, ice skating, or finding another corgi on Instagram to obsess over.
