What Blessed Carlo Acutis Teaches Us | Family, Eucharist, Technology, and Suffering

On October 10, 2020, in Assisi, Carlo Acutis — a Catholic teenager, gamer, and computer programmer who loved soccer and the Eucharist — was beatified. Born in 1991, Carlo lived a short but extraordinary life that continues to inspire the Church today. Pope Francis has called him a “model of holiness in the digital age.”

Carlo’s story shows us that sanctity isn’t out of reach. He teaches us how to impact our families, cherish the Eucharist, use technology for good, and unite our suffering to Christ.

Faith That Transformed His Family

Although his parents were not devout, Carlo’s devotion to daily Mass, Adoration, and the Rosary drew them closer to God. His mother, Antonia, shared:

“Carlo saved me. He pushed me to rediscover my faith.”

Carlo’s example reminds us that even children and young people can lead their families to Christ.

Eucharistic Devotion

At just 7 years old, Carlo received special permission for First Communion. From then until his death, he never missed daily Mass or Eucharistic Adoration. He called the Eucharist his “highway to heaven.”

Carlo also dedicated himself to documenting Eucharistic miracles worldwide, building a digital exhibit that continues to inspire millions. His mission was clear: to help others recognize Christ’s Real Presence.

Holiness in Technology

Carlo loved coding, animation, and even playing video games like Mario Kart and Pokémon. But he limited his gaming to one hour per week as a sacrifice, showing discipline and balance.

He believed the internet could be either destructive or transformative, calling it an “atomic bomb for good.” Carlo chose to harness technology to glorify God by creating Catholic websites, parish resources, and online exhibits.

Suffering With Christ

At age 15, Carlo was diagnosed with acute leukemia. In his final days, he offered up his suffering for Pope Benedict XVI and the Church, saying:

“I offer all the suffering I will have to endure for the Lord, the Pope, and the Church.”

Carlo shows us how to unite our pain with Christ’s Cross, transforming suffering into love.

A Saint for Our Times

Carlo is buried in Assisi, where thousands now visit his tomb. Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino described him perfectly:

“Carlo was a child of our time — a holy person in the digital age.”

As we carry out our own digital ministries, we can consecrate our work to Carlo’s intercession, asking him to guide us in using technology, loving the Eucharist, and witnessing Christ in our everyday lives.

Blessed Carlo Acutis, pray for us!

I’m Amy

After learning about a saint who played tennis and hung out with her friends at coffee shops, I realized you don’t have to be a martyr or a nun to get to Heaven! Through this blog, I share that awesome truth. When I’m not writing, you can find me coding, frequenting Adoration, ice skating, or finding another corgi on Instagram to obsess over.
