Celebrating Blessed Chiara Luce Badano | Ordinary Holiness, Extraordinary Light

Today, October 29, the Church celebrates the feast day of Blessed Chiara Luce Badano, a young Italian teenager whose radiant holiness continues to inspire Catholics around the world.

Often when we think of saints, we picture extraordinary miracles or radical missions. But Chiara’s life reminds us that sainthood is also found in the ordinary moments of faith, love, and surrender.

A Joyful and Ordinary Life

Born in 1971 in a small town in Italy, Chiara was gifted, joyful, and full of life. She loved swimming, tennis, and time with friends. What made her unique was her deep love for others, especially the outcasts. She wanted everyone to experience the gentleness of Jesus’ love.

Even as a child, she saved her money to help the poor in Africa, dreaming of one day becoming a doctor serving on mission.

Facing Suffering With Grace

At 16, while playing tennis, Chiara felt a sharp pain in her shoulder and was soon diagnosed with an aggressive bone cancer. Though she struggled at first, she quickly offered her suffering to God, praying:

“Lord, if you want this, then I want it, too.”

Even as chemotherapy took her hair, she smiled and said, “Jesus, this one’s for you.”

Despite her weakness, she visited another hospital patient who suffered from depression, walking with her daily even though it caused Chiara great pain. Her selflessness brought healing to others even in her suffering.

Preparing for Her “Wedding Day”

Chiara approached her death not with fear, but with joy. She called it her “wedding day,” preparing for her funeral as if it were her marriage feast with Christ. She chose her readings, flowers, and music, and asked to be buried in a white wedding dress with a pink bow.

Her final words to her mother before dying at age 18 were:

“Mom, be happy, because I am.”

Her Legacy of Light

Chiara’s holiness shines in her ordinary yet profound witness: a teenager who embraced love, suffering, and surrender with joy. She continues to inspire youth and adults alike to live simply and wholeheartedly for God.

Blessed Chiara Luce Badano, pray for us.

I’m Amy

After learning about a saint who played tennis and hung out with her friends at coffee shops, I realized you don’t have to be a martyr or a nun to get to Heaven! Through this blog, I share that awesome truth. When I’m not writing, you can find me coding, frequenting Adoration, ice skating, or finding another corgi on Instagram to obsess over.
