How Blessed Chiara Badano Reflects Mary’s Fiat on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

On December 8, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast honors the truth that Mary, from the very moment of her conception, was preserved free from sin and chosen to carry the Son of God.

The Gospel (Luke 1:26–38) recalls the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel greets Mary as “full of grace” and invites her to accept God’s plan:“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done unto me according to your word.”

Blessed Chiara Badano’s Fiat of Faith

Like Mary, Blessed Chiara Luce Badano responded with courage and faith when faced with the unknown. At just 16, she received the devastating diagnosis of osteosarcoma. At first, she was “greatly troubled” and took quiet time to reflect, much like Mary pondering Gabriel’s greeting. But through prayer, Chiara felt God’s assurance: “Do not be afraid … I will be with you.”

Her response—“For You, Jesus; if You want it, I want it too”—echoes Mary’s fiat. Both young women surrendered their futures to God’s will, trusting Him to bring about a greater good through their suffering and sacrifice.

How We Can Live Their Example

Mary and Chiara remind us that true holiness is found in trust and surrender:

  • Take time to ponder God’s voice in prayer.
  • Replace fear with trust in His promises.
  • Say your own “yes” to God daily, even in life’s uncertainties.

On this feast, let us ask Mary and Blessed Chiara to strengthen our courage, so that we, too, can respond: “May it be done unto me according to Your word.”

“We still have our hearts, and with that, we can always love.” — Blessed Chiara Badano

I’m Amy

After learning about a saint who played tennis and hung out with her friends at coffee shops, I realized you don’t have to be a martyr or a nun to get to Heaven! Through this blog, I share that awesome truth. When I’m not writing, you can find me coding, frequenting Adoration, ice skating, or finding another corgi on Instagram to obsess over.
