Every July 16, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a devotion that dates back to the 14th century and is deeply connected to the Carmelite Order. Mount Carmel, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, is where the prophet Elijah triumphed over the priests of Baal, leading the people back to the one true God. By the early 18th century, the feast was formally added to the universal Church calendar.
The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
One of the most beloved Marian sacramentals is the Brown Scapular, given by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock in 1251. She promised:
“Whoever dies clothed in this shall not suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.”
The scapular is not a magical charm or automatic guarantee of salvation, but a sign of devotion and commitment to Christ through Mary. It reminds the faithful of their baptismal call to holiness, unites them spiritually with the Carmelite family, and fosters a life of prayer, faith, hope, and love.
The Sabbatine Privilege
Tradition also speaks of the Sabbatine Privilege, in which Our Lady promised to intercede for souls wearing the scapular, freeing them from purgatory on the first Saturday after death.
Popes and saints throughout history, including Pope Pius XII and St. John Paul II, have recommended this devotion as a powerful way to grow in holiness and Marian intercession.
Living the Message of the Scapular
To fully participate in the blessings of the scapular, the Church encourages:
- Wearing the Brown Scapular faithfully
- Living chastity according to one’s state in life
- Praying the Rosary regularly
The scapular is not an end in itself but a pathway to deeper discipleship, modeled after Mary’s openness to God’s will.
A Novena Prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel
“O most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, splendor of heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God and Mother of mine, support me by your never failing love and help and protect me. Show me that you are my Mother… Queen and Beauty of Carmel, pray for us.”
As we celebrate this feast, let us ask Our Lady of Mount Carmel to clothe us in her protection, lead us closer to her Son, and prepare us for the eternal wedding feast of Heaven.
