Winks From My Dad on the Day I Said Yes | Finding God’s Presence, Grief, and Love During the Christmas Season

I can officially turn my Claddagh ring inwards.

My now-official boyfriend, John, and I decided to go to a restaurant down by the beach. It turned out to be closed for a private event, but in a beautiful twist of God’s timing, it became the perfect opportunity for John to ask me to be his girlfriend. We also exchanged Christmas gifts, and he was incredibly thoughtful in what he picked for me.

On the ride there, I was listening to the oldies station when The Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl” came on—the song my dad and I shared. Every time I play it on the piano, it’s a way I remember him. Hearing it that night felt like a gentle sign, almost as if my dad was saying that it’s okay to move forward with my life. Even in grief, love is still allowed to bloom.

Then, on the way home, I heard Jackson Dean’s “Heavens to Betsey”, a song where a father sings that he’ll be watching over his daughter until they meet again. In that moment, I felt deeply comforted. I know my dad had a hand in bringing John into my life, and that he provided a beautiful example of a healthy, loving relationship during his marriage to my mom—one rooted in faith, devotion, and kindness.

This season has reminded me that God often speaks through the quiet winks of those we’ve lost, especially when our hearts are open. I feel merry and bright this holiday season, and it’s all because of the good men God has brought into my life—past and present.

May you, too, experience love, peace, and joy this Christmas as you prepare to welcome Baby Jesus in the lowly manger.

I’m Amy

After learning about a saint who played tennis and hung out with her friends at coffee shops, I realized you don’t have to be a martyr or a nun to get to Heaven! Through this blog, I share that awesome truth. When I’m not writing, you can find me coding, frequenting Adoration, ice skating, or finding another corgi on Instagram to obsess over.
