Our Amen At The Altar | Allowing Jesus’s Yes to Calm the Storm In Our Lives

In today’s Gospel, Jesus quells the disciples’ fears by calming the storm.

I wanted to share with you my four key takeaways that hit my heart when reading and reflecting.

Matthew 8:24 • “Jesus was sleeping.”

Jesus understood all the nuances of our humanity, even going through it himself. I don’t know about you, but I require so much sleep to function and recharge during my alone time. Perhaps the sound of the lapping waves put Jesus at ease enough to rest in the assurance that his Father’s got him.

Matthew 8:26 • “Why are you so afraid?”

I feel like Jesus was directing this at me. Why are you so afraid to put your complete trust in me? Why are you so afraid to rest in me when you are restless? Why are you so afraid to greet me in the confessional? My dear one, imagine all you could do if you no longer lived in fear.

Matthew 8:26 • “It was completely calm.”

Jesus brings about a calmness that only he can provide when we rest, and I mean truly rest, in him. He is reliable, regal, and radiant in the love he provides for us; we just have to truly accept it with our whole-hearted, full chested yes: our amen at the altar.

Matthew 8:27 • “Even the winds and the waves obey.”

We, too, are called to obey Jesus our God through the commandments and covenants he’s laid out for us, through the sacraments he’s gifted us, and most of all, through the love with which we shower our neighbor.

How are you called to obey today?

I’m Amy

After learning about a saint who played tennis and hung out with her friends at coffee shops, I realized you don’t have to be a martyr or a nun to get to Heaven! Through this blog, I share that awesome truth. When I’m not writing, you can find me coding, frequenting Adoration, ice skating, or finding another corgi on Instagram to obsess over.
