St. Elizabeth, Cousin of Mary | A Model of Firm Faith

Today the Church honors St. Elizabeth, cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary and mother of St. John the Baptist. Her story, told in Luke 1:39–45, reminds us of the joy and faith that come when we trust in God’s promises.

When Mary visited Elizabeth in the hill country of Judah, Scripture tells us that the infant in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy at the sound of Mary’s greeting. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth cried out:

“Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

Elizabeth recognized Mary’s unique role as Mother of the Lord and praised her for her faith:

“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

What St. Elizabeth Teaches Us

Elizabeth stands as a witness to firm belief in God’s word. While Zechariah initially doubted the angel’s announcement, Elizabeth received the gift of faith and proclaimed the Lord’s blessings with boldness.

Her story reminds us that God’s promises are trustworthy and that true joy flows from recognizing His work in our lives. Like Elizabeth, may we cultivate hearts that believe, even when the path ahead feels uncertain.
